Role Summary
As TBI grows, we are evolving our global operating model to best support the delivery of our mission. The Institute’s global Legal Team compromises ten colleagues working within our London and regional operating offices across Asia, Africa, Middle East and the Americas.
As part of the growth of the Legal Team’s offering, the Legal Coordinator, Africa will play a key role in the delivery of services for over 18 countries within our growing Africa portfolio. The portfolio crosses East and Southern Africa, together with West and Central Africa (including Francophone countries).
The Legal Coordinator, Africa will provide core support for the Legal Counsel, Africa, work closely with the Director of Operations and other key stakeholders within our Africa Advisory division and the wider Legal Team. The role will hold and deliver a broad portfolio of work.
This is a new role created to enable more expedient delivery of legal services for our Africa Advisory division, given the absence of key Legal Team colleagues who will be on secondment for a period of time. This is an initial fixed-term role of 12 months. Extension of the duration or conversion into permanent employment will be determined in good time before the expiration of the fixed term.
The successful candidate must have the right to work in either London, Accra, Dakar or Nairobi.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide timely, responsive and risk-based approach to the delivery of legal support to the Africa region and its stakeholders including across contracting, donor and funding arrangements, leasehold arrangements, consultancy arrangements, non-disclosure arrangements, visa and immigration requirements
- Identify, assess and inform Legal Counsel, Africa and where relevant leadership of any internal and external legal matters that may impact operations, recommending interim or permanent solutions wherever possible and applicable
- Support the Legal Counsel, Africa in the delivery of all services required of the function
- Support in the administration of compliance and entity management requirements and responsibilities in the Africa portfolio including in the formation, structuring and operationalisation of the Institute’s foreign branches and subsidiaries
- Support in the provision of advice in relation to government procurement and tender processes
- Support the Legal Counsel, Africa in the management of relevant external counsel and professional advisors
- Where required, conduct KYC checks for new supplier, third-party, counterpart and donor onboarding in accordance with established procedures
- Maintain all relevant Africa portfolio data in the global Legal Team’s entity management database and other storage drives
- Build good internal and external relationships to support effective delivery
- As part of the global Legal Team, support in the design and implementation of global legal processes, policies, ways of working, and legal services delivery projects from time-to-time
- Use knowledge and initiative to find solutions to challenges, enabling an entrepreneurial delivery of legal services to the business
- Work with other colleagues and teams as a stakeholder in the excellent delivery of business support services to the organization.
Person Specification
We are looking for an outstanding and enthusiastic candidate who has experience working in a junior support role within an in-house or private practice legal environment, ideally across a pan African portfolio. Above all, we are looking for individuals with high levels of enthusiasm, resilience, adaptability and a can-do attitude.
- Entry level legal qualification, education, or equivalent experience
- Ability to recognise legal and regulatory risks and implement risk management strategies
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy and organisational skills
- Ability to be able to understand complex corporate structures
- Ability to be able to work independently and manage time effectively in a deadline-driven environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Business fluency in English. Additional language skills particularly in French and/or Portuguese would be an advantage
