Student Internship Position in Nairobi, Fall 2025

Vacant Position for a Student Intern at the Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi

March 4, 2025

Would you like to gain unique insight into the foreign service and learn more about the UN, Kenya, and Somalia? The Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi is offering an internship position for the fall of 2025, starting Monday, August 4, 2025. The application deadline is March 15, 2025.

The purpose of the internship program is to spread knowledge and interest in the work of the foreign service. As an intern, you will gain a thorough understanding of the embassy’s various tasks and responsibilities, as well as aspects of Norway’s cooperation with the UN (UNEP and UN Habitat), Kenya, and Somalia. The tasks will include political and economic reporting, information and communication work, aid management, multilateral work, promotion of trade, facilitation of visits/events, as well as administrative and consular duties.

Nairobi is one of the UN’s headquarters, and several UN and multilateral organizations are based there. Norway has broad cooperation with the UN, Kenya, and Somalia. Interns will have a particular responsibility to strengthen our internal and external communication regarding this cooperation.

Qualifications

It is a requirement that the applicant meets the criteria for student interns as outlined on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website and accepts the conditions described there.

Applicants must be Norwegian citizens.

The following will be considered in the evaluation of candidates:

  • Ongoing higher education in social sciences, economics, or law
  • Relevant academic background and interest in foreign policy
  • Knowledge of Kenyan and/or Somali politics, culture, and society is an advantage
  • Experience or interest in aid/development cooperation is an advantage
  • Personal initiative
  • Analytical skills
  • Good abilities for both teamwork and independent work
  • Experience with social media and web publishing
  • Excellent written communication skills in Norwegian
  • Very good English skills (both written and oral)

Stipend and Practical Matters

The internship lasts for six months, starting Monday, August 4, 2025.

The internship program is unpaid, but the intern will receive a stipend of NOK 15,500 (Kes 185,030.19) per month. The stipend can be combined with support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen). The intern is responsible for covering their own travel and accommodation expenses and must arrange their own housing.

Applicants must be prepared for the possibility that changes in travel advice for Kenya could result in the internship offer being withdrawn. Any expenses incurred before the start of the internship will not be covered in such cases.

How to Apply

Applications in Norwegian, including a CV, references, and documentation from the place of study (transcripts or confirmation of enrollment), must be sent to emb.nairobi@mfa.no by March 15, 2025. Please send your application and attachments in a single PDF file, with the applicant’s name included in the filename. The subject line of the email should be marked “Internship Application Fall 2025.”

Questions regarding the internship can be directed to Minister-Counsellor Geir Arne Schei at geir.arne.schei@mfa.no.
