Position: Assistant Librarian – Grade E/F

Areas of Specialization: Library Studies, Library Science, Information Science or equivalent

Person Specifications

  • An earned Master’s Degree in Library Studies, Library Science, Information Science, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • An earned Bachelor’s Degree in the same fields from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • A cumulative service period of six (6) years of relevant work experience, three (3) of which must have been at Senior Library Assistant Grade C/D or equivalent in industry.
  • Registered with a relevant professional body.
  • Demonstrated merit and ability reflected in work performance and results.
  • Proficient in computer applications.

Job Purpose

The Assistant Librarian will be responsible for the general maintenance and efficient functioning of the University College Library under the guidance of a senior officer.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensuring smooth and efficient running of library services and maintaining the library database.
  • Indexing and abstracting journal articles.
  • Preparing work plans for junior officers and coordinating their activities.
  • Preparing departmental quarterly reports.
  • Supervising charging and discharging of library information resources.
  • Coordinating provision of reference and referral services to library patrons.
  • Ensuring distribution of publishers’ catalogues to faculty deans and heads of departments.
  • Cataloguing and classifying newly acquired information resources.
  • Verifying bibliographic details of library materials.
  • Maintaining and operating library management systems.
  • Performing stock editing.
  • Teaching Library Skills and user education.
  • Offering ICT services to various categories of users.

Terms of Service

This position is on permanent and pensionable terms. The successful candidate will be remunerated in accordance with the Inter Public University Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) and 2021–2025 CBA approved salary rates.
