Organizational Setting
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference, and information services.
This internship is located within the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) and the Visitors’ Service Department in Nairobi. The Visitors’ Service provides guided in-person and virtual tours of the United Nations Office at Nairobi through professional guides who act as ambassadors of the United Nations. The Service promotes public understanding and support for the work of the United Nations by communicating its mission and impact to local audiences, engaging local and regional partners, and bringing the United Nations closer to the people it serves.
The intern will work under the supervision of the Chief of the United Nations Visitors’ Service.
Internship Conditions
- The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
- Interns work five days per week (35 hours).
- Daily responsibilities depend on the intern’s background, assigned office, and internship period.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Visitors’ Service, the intern will:
- Assist in photography assignments.
- Ensure fulfillment of all photography and videography requests, including production of short videos aligned with current digital audience needs.
- Assist in setting up UN WebTV services.
- Assist with receiving guests at the UNON main entrance during events or official visits.
- Assist with translation of content and sharing with relevant partners.
- Assist with rapporteur assignments.
- Assist with setting up Visitors’ Service meetings and highlights.
- Assist in drafting stories showcasing results of the UN’s work based on reports.
- Assist in researching and writing short content for Visitors’ Service platforms, outreach events, and activities.
- Assist in creating visual assets using tools such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, and Illustrator for social media platforms and the website.
- Assist in drafting content for Visitors’ Service social media platforms and website and enhancing interactivity.
- Assist in increasing online engagement, including Facebook Live sessions with youths aligned with advocacy campaigns and events.
- Perform any other assigned duties.
Qualifications and Special Skills
Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher), or
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), or
- Have graduated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or equivalent degree.
Additional requirements:
- Computer literacy in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Preferred fields of study:
Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Social Sciences, Graphic Design, IT, or related fields.
Professional work experience is not required. A field of study closely related to the internship is required. Applicants must indicate which eligibility criterion they meet and attach proof at the time of application. An official certificate will be required at a later stage.
Desirable skills:
Proficiency in graphic, motion, and photo-editing software, including Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, After Effects, and Canva.
