Role Summary:

The Associate Linguist will be responsible for interpreting focus sentences within source content and extracting minimally-complete, non-ambiguous claims (propositions). In addition, the role involves analyzing and visually diagramming the grammatical structure of English sentences. It requires strong expertise in English grammar and the ability to apply sentence diagramming rules. By leveraging sentence diagramming, the specialist will ensure precise and unambiguous claims are extracted from text.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop basic training materials to support labeler training.
  • Conduct training sessions for labelers and reviewers.
  • Perform periodic quality reviews to ensure labeling compliance with guidelines and address any areas of confusion.
  • Facilitate Q&A sessions with annotators and reviewers.
  • Proactively identify and document edge cases, communicating them to both the client and labelers.
  • Collaborate with project leaders and data managers on labeling quality metrics.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in English Language, Literature, or Linguistics
  • Strong understanding of English grammar, including parts of speech (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections), and their functions in sentences.
  • Expertise in sentence structure analysis, including subjects, predicates, objects, and complements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in sentence diagramming to clarify complex linguistic structures.
  • Proficiency in strong grammatical and semantic analysis to clarify complex linguistic relationships.
  • Excellent analytical and interpretive skills for extracting claims and meaning from complex texts.
  • Prior experience in linguistic, grammatical, and semantic analysis, including resolving ambiguity and handling complex edge cases.

Preferred:

  • Experience in linguistic annotation, content analysis, or similar fields requiring precise text interpretation.
  • Familiarity with various types of phrases and clauses (e.g., prepositional, gerund, infinitive, independent, dependent) and their diagramming.
  • Other potential backgrounds could include Technical Writing, NLP Researcher, and linguistics.
  • Proficient in using the Google Drawing tool to create sentence diagrams.

Other information:

  • 1 month contract with a possibility of extension based on the project demands
  • Kenya:
    • You will initially be required to work from 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM (midnight) EAT to align with the US-based team, for a total of 8 hours per day. After completing the training period, you will be able to transition to working during your local daytime hours.
  • Philippines:
    • You will initially be required to work from 9pm – 5am PHT to align with the US-based team, for a total of 8 hours per day. After completing the training period, you will be able to transition to working during your local daytime hours.
