Organization Summary:

The Green Belt Movement (GBM) is a leading grassroots environmental organization founded in 1977 by the late Professor Wangari Maathai, Africa’s first female Nobel Peace Laureate. GBM works to empower communities, especially women, to conserve the environment, restore degraded landscapes, and improve livelihoods. By combining tree planting, civic education, and policy advocacy, GBM supports sustainable development while championing social and environmental justice in Kenya and beyond.

Position Summary:

The Communications Intern, reporting to the Communications Officer, will contribute directly to GBM’s visibility, storytelling, and advocacy efforts. This role provides recent graduates with hands-on experience in the fields of environmental communication, digital media, and nonprofit advocacy. The intern will support the implementation of GBM’s Communications Strategy (2025-2027), with a focus on amplifying impact stories, engaging target audiences, enhancing media relations, and supporting internal communication workflows.

This is a learning and contribution opportunity designed to strengthen both organizational communication and the intern’s professional growth. The intern will be expected to proactively support campaigns, digital content, donor and partner engagement materials, and internal storytelling processes.

Duration: 3 months with the possibility of extension.

Location: Nairobi, Green Belt Movement Headquarters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in writing and editing reports, blogs and success stories;
  • Assist in organizing events;
  • Participate in activities organized by the organization or partners and write articles for dissemination;
  • Assist in maintaining and engaging the general public through the organization’s social media sites;
  • Assist in building strong and active relationships with the media to increase the organization’s profile in Kenya and internationally;
  • Assist in responding to general requests as will be instructed
  • Assist in the planning and documentation of awareness campaigns, donor events, policy forums, and environmental commemorations.
  • Draft talking points, event summaries, and social content to promote GBM events and campaigns.
  • Support implementation of advocacy and issue-based communication aligned with GBM’s strategic pillars (restoration, livelihoods, advocacy).
  • Assist in developing communication materials for events and help spread awareness through relevant channels; and
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in Communications or related qualification;
  • Graduates, especially fresh graduates who show genuine desire to serve with demonstrated good character, honesty and high competency;
  • Excellent writing, proofreading and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to simplify complex technical content into engaging, accessible narratives.;
  • Familiarity with website management, social media platforms and branding,
  • Ability to plan and curate campaigns, events and workshops;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Excellent design, photography and videography skills with knowledge of editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva
  • Ability to stay focused, efficient, and effective in managing multiple priorities;
  • Professional demeanor and ability to handle sensitive situations in a calm and professional manner;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment;
  • Proven ability to work independently to achieve accomplishments; and
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
