Purpose
Kenya’s ASAL counties have the lowest development indicators in the Country. They record some
of the lowest achievements in numeracy and literacy skills which has a snowball effect on overall
learning outcomes. Girls and young women from this region are the most affected. The gender
barriers contributing to their poor educational attainment and general life outcomes are historical
marginalisation rooted in extreme poverty, pervasive patriarchal socio-cultural practices, poor
infrastructure, and a general lack of resources to support access to essential social services.
The purpose of ths engagement is to respond to the educational gap necessitated by the myriad
of challenges hindering girls and young women access to basic education; ta fundamental right as
stipulated in the Kenyan constitution. As such, Akili Dada seeks the services of a facilitator
(teacher) to effectively deliver numeracy, literacy and other health and lifeskill sessions in the
Manyatta homeschooling project
Project Outcome
The pilot ‘Manyatta Homeschooling’ Project aims at ensuring out to school girls and young women (15 to 25 years) access basic non-formal education that enhances their livelihood and increase literacy in Samburu County. The goal of the project is to ‘Create a pathway to formal education for out-of-school girls’ .
Program Objectives:
- To provide foundational numeracy and literacy skills that would allow for the transition to a formal education system
- To provide civic education focused on increasing girls’ knowledge, awareness, and understanding of girls and human rights with a sharp focus on the right to education.
- To provide transferable skills training to equip them with basic entrepreneurial, reproductive, and mental health resources enabling them to make informed choices about their lives.
Expected Deliverables
- Conduct a pre-assessment evaluation to assess the different levels of learners and prepare a report.
- Conduct three-day, weekly learning sessions (2 hr daily) with constituents.
- Conduct weekly orientation with shadow facilitators in preparation for the weekly constituent classes.
- Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans for the weekly constituent classes.
- Train constituents on numeracy and literacy skills,
- Facilitate complementary entrepreneurial, rights, and other life skill sessions as guided by Akili Dada Curriculum.
- Prepare and submit weekly and monthly reports on the learners’ progress – achievements, and challenges using the Akili Dada-provided reporting template.
- Participate in routine review/monitoring meetings scheduled by Angaza Program.
- Prepare and conduct routine assessments to assess constituents learning progress.
- Conduct periodic needs assessments to determine the necessary teaching aids and be responsible for their safety, effectiveness, and efficiency.
- Represent the organization in county meetings and engagements when called upon.
- Support Akili Dada staff in project-based data collection.
- Abide by Akili Dada’s Safeguarding and Girl Engagement policy.
Approach and methodology
- The training approach should be based on adult learning principles and employ participatory methodologies such as demonstration, practical exercises, role play, and small and plenary discussions.
Facilitator Profile
- Diploma or certificate in Education/ECD/Adult Learning.
- Understanding of the Kilifi-Ganze and Kwale- Lungalunga Context.
- A resident of the Ganze/Lungalunga constituencies
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
- Sensitive and committed to gender equality and equity.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
