Head of Department – ICU/HDU at 3rd Park Hospital

3rd Park Hospital is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Department – ICU/HDU to lead and manage its critical care services. The successful candidate will provide strategic and clinical leadership to ensure delivery of high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care in both the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU).

The Head of Department will oversee all ICU/HDU services, ensuring compliance with clinical standards, patient safety measures, and continuous quality improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and management of ICU/HDU services.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, protocols, and quality standards.
  • Oversee patient care and ensure adherence to evidence-based critical care practices.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate ICU/HDU staff, including doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Coordinate staff scheduling, workload management, and training needs.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources, equipment, and consumables in critical care units.
  • Monitor patient safety indicators, infection control, and clinical outcomes, and drive quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership and multidisciplinary teams to support seamless care delivery.
  • Lead morbidity and mortality reviews, audits, and departmental meetings.
  • Support continuous professional development and promote a culture of excellence and teamwork.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Postgraduate training in Anaesthesia, Critical Care Medicine, or specialization in ICU care.
  • Valid registration and practicing license with the Nursing Council of Kenya (KMPDC).
  • Minimum of 5–7 years’ clinical experience in ICU/HDU, with at least 1–2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Mandatory valid ACLS & BLS certification.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership, management, and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent clinical decision-making and critical care expertise.
  • In-depth knowledge of ICU/HDU protocols, infection prevention, and advanced life support.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective team coordination.
  • Ability to work under pressure in high-acuity environments.
