The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is a regional non-profit research and policy Institute established in 2010 to help bridge the gaps between research, policy and practice in development efforts in Africa. Our primary purpose is to contribute to sustainable development through the use of evidence and advocacy to strengthen political commitment and resource allocation for development issues; informing the design and implementation of effective interventions; and strengthening governance and accountability structures for tracking development challenges in Africa. AFIDEP is registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation in both Kenya and Malawi (where it has offices) and as a non-profit institution in the USA with 501(c)3 status. AFIDEP is seeking to recruit two (2) Human Resource Interns to provide administrative and operational support to the Human Resources team in implementing HR functions such as recruitment, onboarding, records management, employee engagement amongst others. The ideal candidate must have a Bachelors’ Degree in Human Resource Management or Business Administration or related field of study.

Location:  1 based in Nairobi – Kenya, 1 based in Lilongwe – Malawi

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist with recruitment processes, including posting job adverts, screening CVs, and scheduling interviews
  • Support onboarding and offboarding processes
  • Maintain and update HR records and files in the HR Information System (HRIS)
  • Support the preparation and execution of HR documents for audits and compliance processes.
  • Assist with leave tracking, timesheet management and contract management
  • TEP Management with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Immigration for Expatriates.
  • Management of membership subscriptions of staff to various professional member bodies.
  • Support employee engagement initiatives and internal communication
  • Participate in HR policy reviews and process improvements
  • Provide general administrative support to the HR team

Qualifications

  • A Degree in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Good understanding of HR functions, labour laws/regulations and best practices
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively on issues to a range of audiences as well as meaningfully interact and engage with diverse teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as independently in a fast-paced environment and with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills
  • Discretion and ability to handle sensitive information
  • A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to work in a multicultural team.
