Role Overview

AMI supports entrepreneurs and managers across Africa to grow businesses and create jobs through practical learning and data-driven solutions. The Impact Insights Analyst will transform analysis-ready data into clear insights, segmentation, dashboards, and recommendations that guide program and client decisions.

The role sits within the Impact Intelligence team and works closely with the Data Warehouse team, which owns data ingestion and modelling. This role owns the analysis plan, data quality for decision-making, and the insight layer.

Key Responsibilities

1. Data Readiness & Quality

  • Define validation checks and write QA queries
  • Document assumptions and maintain lightweight data dictionaries for program, diagnostic, and survey datasets
  • Raise, track, and resolve data quality issues in collaboration with the Data Warehouse team

2. Analytics & Segmentation

  • Lead descriptive, diagnostic, and basic inferential analyses
  • Design and implement rule-based and clustering segmentation (e.g., k-means) suited to MSMEs
  • Conduct cohort and retention analysis
  • Run simple regressions and hypothesis tests to inform decision-making

3. Dashboards & Insight Storytelling

  • Build decision-focused dashboards in Metabase
  • Produce concise insight memos and partner-ready slide decks that clearly articulate:
    • What happened
    • Why it matters
    • What should be done next

4. Stakeholder Enablement

  • Run office hours and short trainings for non-technical colleagues
  • Track adoption of dashboards and insights, and iterate based on feedback

5. Impact, MEL & Learning Support

  • Own analysis plans, question banks, and insight narratives for impact reporting and learning agendas
  • Contribute insight assets to proposals and client presentations

6. Data Governance & Reproducibility

  • Apply AMI privacy, consent, and data governance standards
  • Promote reproducible analysis using version-controlled notebooks and documented SQL

Role Boundaries

  • The role does not own ETL pipelines, raw schema design, or infrastructure
  • Works collaboratively with the Data Warehouse team on these areas

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5–7 years of applied analytics experience with program, survey, or enterprise datasets, preferably in African contexts
  • Advanced SQL experience in production environments (CTEs, window functions, joins, data quality checks)
  • Proficiency in Python or R for analysis and validation workflows
  • Strong BI experience using Metabase (preferred), Power BI, or Tableau
  • Proven ability to translate analysis into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical audiences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English
  • Comfortable working independently in a distributed, fast-paced environment

Skills & Attributes

  • Advanced SQL (must-have) with demonstrated BI dashboarding experience
  • Strong data visualization and dashboard design skills
  • Analytical rigor and statistical thinking (hypothesis testing, regression, cohort analysis)
  • Segmentation design with strong feature selection, validation, and business interpretability
  • Experience with MSME, learning, MEL, financial inclusion, or market research datasets
  • Familiarity with survey tools (Kobo, SurveyMonkey, Qualtrics)
  • Exposure to dbt and Git for reproducible analytics
  • Familiarity with BigQuery, Postgres, or Snowflake
  • Clear documentation, version control discipline, and transparent assumptions
  • Strong stakeholder empathy and ability to coach and influence decisions
  • High ownership, integrity, and follow-through

Our Values

  • Be the best – Deliver quality work that delights clients
  • Own it – Take accountability and deliver results
