Job purpose
The overall purpose of this job is to provide patient care in line with hospital’s values, mission and vision.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Provide a continuous on-site medical support service to meet the needs of patients and the hospital.
- Diagnose internal injuries and diseases, and prescribe medication or surgery;
- Order and analyze tests like X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs;
- Schedule operations, coordinate the staff, plan the procedures, and order instruments and other supplies.
- Conduct examinations to ill patients and evaluate symptoms to determine their medical condition and surgical risks.
- Analyze patient’s medical history, medication allergies, physical condition, and examination results to verify operation’s necessity and to determine best procedure.
- Prescribe preoperative and postoperative treatments and procedures, such as sedatives, diets, antibiotics, and preparation and treatment of the patient’s operative area.
- Effectively document patient information to show current findings and treatments and write discharge summaries and medical reports for patients.
- Conduct major and minor ward rounds as required and be available to discuss patient treatment plans.
- Perform medical and surgical procedures as licensed.
- Ensure that professional clinical standards and other legal frameworks are complied with in all the clinical departments of the hospital
- Represent the hospital in medical-legal matters when called upon.
- Conduct and participate in Continuous Medical Education (CME), Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and train and supervise medical students and interns in the hospital.
- Participate and serve in Clinical Committees such as Mortality/Morbidity, Clinical Audit, Infection Prevention & Control, Waste Management and other health committees.
- Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications for Resident Physician
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in General Surgery from a recognized institution
- Full registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
- Completion of internship and 6–12 months’ post-internship.
- Clinical competence, strong judgment, and professionalism.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and empathetic patient-centered care approach.
