Job Title: Thabat / Grant AccountantReports to:  Finance Manager

Job Summary:

The Thabat / Grant Accountant will coordinate and contribute to the implementation of the Thabat project’s financial policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with CRS’ accounting standards, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), World Bank rules and regulations, and national legal requirements. The role is responsible for delivering high-quality accounting and financial reporting services across the Thabat project life cycle. This includes accurately documenting financial transactions, supporting subrecipient financial management, producing timely reports, and ensuring strong stewardship of project resources to support programming for vulnerable communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set and monitor sound accounting and financial reporting procedures for Thabat subrecipients and partners in line with CRS and donor standards.
  • Ensure accurate setup and maintenance of financial data in the accounting software for all assigned Thabat accounts.
  • Document financial transactions by compiling, analyzing, and verifying account information, and preparing journal entries.
  • Conduct monthly reviews of project expenditures to ensure proper cost allocation and coding.
  • Assess, evaluate, and monitor subrecipient financial management systems to ensure compliance with World Bank and CRS requirements.
  • Strengthening the financial capacity of subrecipients through targeted training, mentoring, and capacity-building activities.
  • Monitor disbursement and liquidation schedules; communicate with partners and staff to ensure timely financial resource management.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely Interim Financial Reports (IFRs) and quarterly forecasts to the World Bank.
  • Prepare periodic and ad hoc financial reports, perform variance analysis, and share insights with program teams to support decision-making.
  • Monitor budget utilization, expenditures, and commitments to ensure alignment with approved budgets.
  • Support budget revisions, reforecasts, and financial planning processes in coordination with program staff.
  • Support timely reconciliation of bank and cash accounts.
  • Provide guidance to Thabat staff, subrecipients, and partners on financial accounting policies, compliance standards, and reporting requirements.
  • Deliver training sessions and develop tools to strengthen compliance with World Bank financial rules and CRS standards.
  • Support audit preparations, coordinate audit fieldwork, and ensure timely responses to audit queries and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with Procurement and Operations teams to ensure that all project expenditures are booked promptly and accurately.
  • Ensure timely sharing and coordination with program and operations units to support efficient financial management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Proficient in MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio), Web Conferencing Applications. 
  • Excellent analytical skills with ability to detect and report inconsistencies

Required Languages: English proficiency

Travel: Must be willing and able to travel up to 10 %.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration with courses in accounting, or a qualification in accounting (CPA/ACCA or equivalent).
  • Minimum of two-five years’ experience in a position with similar responsibilities, preferably with an international or local NGO, or a financial/banking institution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the relevant public donor regulations preferred.
  • Knowledge of Sun Systems financial accounting package or similar financial reporting software preferred.
