The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) is Kenya’s apex financial institution, established in 1966 under the Central Bank of Kenya Act. The Bank is responsible for formulating and implementing monetary policy to achieve and maintain price stability while promoting a sound, stable, and efficient financial system. As the country’s central bank, CBK regulates and supervises commercial banks, microfinance banks, mortgage finance companies, payment service providers, digital credit providers, and foreign exchange bureaus. The Bank also issues Kenya’s currency, manages the country’s foreign exchange reserves, oversees national payment, clearing and settlement systems, acts as banker and fiscal agent to the Government of Kenya, and advises the government on economic and financial matters.
