Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) is a State Corporation under the Ministry of Roads and Transport mandated to provide efficient, safe, and sustainable railway transport services while developing and managing Kenya’s railway infrastructure. Established in 1978, Kenya Railways has played a central role in supporting economic growth through passenger and freight transport, logistics, inland waterways, railway engineering, and infrastructure development. The corporation manages both the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) networks, connecting major cities, ports, industrial zones, and neighboring countries.
Kenya Railways is responsible for operating the Madaraka Express Passenger Service, freight transportation, inland container depots, commuter rail services, railway asset management, and the development of the Nairobi Railway City project. The corporation also promotes railway research, technology transfer, skills development through the Railway Training Institute (RTI), and strategic partnerships that strengthen Kenya’s transport and logistics sector.
