Job Description
Introduction
A Senior Accounts Clerk will be responsible for general ledger accounting, month-end closing, tax compliance, banking operations, account reconciliations, and financial reporting support. The role requires strong hands-on experience with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) iTax platform, Kenyan tax regulations, and local banking processes.
Your Responsibilities
General Ledger & Financial Accounting
- Manage day-to-day general ledger accounting and ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions.
- Perform month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepayments, provisions, depreciation, and other accounting adjustments.
- Perform regular balance sheet reconciliations and follow up on outstanding or unreconciled items.
- Reconcile bank accounts, receivables, payables, fixed assets, tax accounts, and other key balance sheet accounts.
- Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Maintain proper accounting records and supporting documentation.
- Assist with internal audits, external audits, and statutory audits by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documents.
- Ensure accounting treatment complies with applicable accounting standards, company policies, and local regulatory requirements.
Tax Compliance
- support tax filings through the KRA iTax platform;Prepare, review, and reconcile applicable tax returns;Ensure tax returns and payments are completed accurately and within statutory deadlines;Reconcile tax returns against accounting records and investigate any differences;Keep up to date with changes in Kenyan tax laws, regulations, and KRA compliance requirements;Support responses to KRA queries, tax reviews, audits, assessments, and requests for information;Experience with eTIMS and other KRA compliance systems will be an advantage.
Banking & Treasury Support
- Support the company’s day-to-day banking and treasury activities.
- Perform regular bank reconciliations and follow up on outstanding items: Candidates with practical experience working with Stanbic Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, or other major Kenyan commercial banks will be preferred;Experience with online corporate banking platforms is required.
Infrastructure / Project Finance Support
- Support accounting and financial matters relating to infrastructure or project-based operations;Review financial and tax implications of procurement, service, construction, and operational contracts;Work closely with procurement, operations, legal, HR, and other departments on payment, tax, cost allocation, and accounting matters;Assist in monitoring project-related expenditure, operating costs, and other financial information.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of relevant accounting experience, with solid exposure to general ledger accounting and month-end closing.
- Practical working experience with KRA iTax and Kenyan tax compliance processes.
- Good working knowledge of Kenyan tax laws and statutory reporting requirements.
- Previous experience in the infrastructure, construction, transport, roads, energy, PPP, engineering, or related sectors is highly desirable.
- Experience handling corporate banking transactions and bank reconciliations in Kenya.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with ERP or accounting systemsÂ
- CPA(K), ACCA, or equivalent professional qualification, completed or in progress, will be preferred.
- Language Requirements: Fluent written and spoken English is required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with KRA, banks, auditors, suppliers, and other external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of Chinese is an advantage but is not mandatory.
