I recently undertook a study on the role of agricultural training on aflatoxin levels in selected maize farms in Nandi, County, Kenya. The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term influence of the training on the practices and aflatoxin levels. This study was a follow up on the previous study that had been done by Marete and others in the year 2017 on the effects of Good Agricultural Practices on Aflatoxin Levels in Maize grown in Nandi County, Kenya. The objective was to assess the role played by the training and its long-term impact on the agricultural practices and aflatoxin levels. In the study, a comparison was made for the responses on the use of twenty Agricultural practices by the trained farmers in the year 2017 against the same cohort in the year 2023 and also against the untrained farmers.
Work & Experience
• Participate in the day-to-day running of the departmental laboratory and coordinate the ordering of consumables and other items for practical classes.
• Implement standard biosafety measures in the laboratory's management.
• Ensure all policies and procedures required for good research practices and good laboratory practices are followed within the laboratory areas.
• Provide Training in good research practice and good laboratory practices to new laboratory workers, including teaching staff, postgraduate, and undergraduate students.
• Assist in maintaining a safe working environment in the department by following standard operating procedures for safe working practices.
• Assist in the preparation of articles for publication and other scientific communications (e.g, posters and oral presentations.
• Provide research support for academic members of staff and postgraduate students when required.
• Participate in activities aimed at improving the delivery of practical classes, including design exhibitions.
• Implementing and maintaining laboratory Quality Assurance programs to ensure that all laboratory analyses meet the required criteria and regulatory requirements.
• Reviewing laboratory procedures and protocols to ensure compliance with laboratory standards and applicable regulations.
• Verifying laboratory reports and data to ensure they align with quality standards and regulatory requirements.
• Overseeing the calibration, operation, and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Creating and managing staff training programs to ensure personnel development and compliance with operational standards.
• Monitoring laboratory proficiency testing programs and addressing any deficiencies identified
• Preparing reports, maintaining documentation, and ensuring accurate record-keeping of laboratory functions and data.
• Serving as the primary point of contact for regulatory inquiries, audits, and inspections related to the laboratory.
• Reviewing laboratory procedures and protocols to ensure compliance with industry standards and applicable regulations.
• Writing proposals for grant application and participating in consultancies work.
