Job Description
Job Purpose
Taison Group is seeking a qualified Biomedical Engineer to support medical planning and equipment projects for new and refurbished healthcare facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that medical equipment is properly specified, assessed, planned, installed, commissioned, and integrated into healthcare infrastructure.
The role involves working closely with architects, clinical planners, construction teams, MEP engineers, clients, and equipment vendors to deliver safe, functional, and compliant healthcare facilities within established project timelines.
Key Responsibilities
1. Medical Planning and Design Support
- Participate in medical planning for healthcare projects, translating clinical requirements into spatial, technical, and infrastructure specifications.
- Advise on room layouts, workflow, equipment placement, and adjacency requirements for radiology, theatres, ICUs, laboratories, and other clinical areas.
- Review architectural, structural, and MEP drawings to ensure compatibility with medical equipment requirements, including power, HVAC, shielding, medical gases, data, and structural loads.
- Contribute to functional design briefs, room data sheets, and medical equipment schedules.
2. Equipment Assessment, Selection and Procurement
- Conduct needs assessments and evaluate medical technologies, including imaging, life-support, monitoring, laboratory, and surgical equipment.
- Prepare technical specifications, evaluate vendor proposals, and support tendering and procurement processes.
- Assess equipment suitability, lifecycle costs, interoperability, serviceability, and compliance with applicable Kenyan and international standards.
- Provide input on maintenance contracts, lifecycle costing, and spare-parts planning.
3. Medical Equipment Installation Project Management
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee the installation, commissioning, and handover of medical equipment, particularly CT scanners, fixed and mobile X-ray systems, ultrasound equipment, and imaging suites.
- Develop installation schedules, method statements, risk assessments, and site-readiness checklists.
- Coordinate with construction teams, vendors, radiation protection officers, and facility managers on shielding, power supply, cooling, structural modifications, and radiation safety.
- Supervise site works involving equipment foundations, cabling, medical gas connections, and associated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) installations.
- Coordinate equipment suppliers, contractors, and clinical end-users, resolving technical issues and non-conformances promptly.
4. Installation, Commissioning, Maintenance and Technical Support
- Oversee or perform equipment installation, calibration, acceptance testing, and commissioning.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance programmes and schedules.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and coordinate warranty and post-warranty servicing.
- Maintain accurate equipment inventories, asset registers, service histories, and technical documentation.
- Support the training of clinical and technical staff on the safe and effective use of medical equipment.
5. Compliance, Quality and Safety
- Ensure medical equipment and installations comply with applicable Kenyan regulations, radiation safety requirements, manufacturer guidelines, and relevant IEC/ISO standards.
- Conduct risk assessments, failure mode analyses, and investigations into medical device-related incidents.
- Support radiation protection planning and verification for medical imaging rooms.
- Maintain accurate documentation for audits, equipment handovers, and regulatory submissions.
- Promote infection prevention and control and infection control risk assessment (IPC/ICRA) requirements during healthcare construction and equipment installation.
6. Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, quantity surveyors, site engineers, clinical planners, clients, and contractors.
- Provide technical input during design reviews, value engineering, and project change management.
- Keep abreast of developments in medical technology, regulatory requirements, and healthcare construction practices.
- Mentor junior staff and technicians and contribute to knowledge sharing within the Group.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Performance will be evaluated based on the following:
- Timely project delivery: Achieve at least 90–95% adherence to planned equipment planning, installation, and commissioning milestones.
- Quality and compliance: Minimise major non-conformances and regulatory findings, ensuring successful acceptance testing and equipment handover.
- Cost control: Deliver equipment and installation packages within approved budgets while maintaining clinical and safety standards.
- Technical accuracy: Ensure accurate equipment specifications, schedules, and documentation, with minimal post-installation design changes attributable to biomedical engineering input.
- Stakeholder satisfaction: Maintain positive working relationships with project managers, clients, clinical users, and vendors.
- Safety and risk management: Complete risk assessments and required safety documentation on time, with no serious safety incidents attributable to equipment installation works.
- Documentation and knowledge sharing: Maintain up-to-date equipment registers, service records, and project lessons learned.
- Professional development: Stay current with relevant technologies, regulations, and best practices while contributing to team development.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field, such as Medical Engineering or Clinical Engineering. A master’s degree is an added advantage.
- Proven experience in medical planning, equipment assessment and selection, and project management of medical equipment installations, preferably involving CT scanners, X-ray systems, or other major imaging modalities.
- Hands-on experience in the installation, commissioning, or technical management of diagnostic imaging, critical care, and hospital equipment.
- Strong understanding of hospital infrastructure requirements, including medical gases, HVAC systems, electrical installations, radiation shielding, and infection prevention and control.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and MEP drawings, as well as technical equipment manuals.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including planning, coordination, risk management, and delivery within agreed timelines and budgets.
- Knowledge of applicable Kenyan regulations and international standards governing medical devices and healthcare facilities.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and report-writing skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management tools; familiarity with CAD or BIM viewing software is an added advantage.
- Willingness to travel to project sites across Kenya and work flexible hours when required.
- Professional registration or membership with a relevant engineering body, such as the Engineers Board of Kenya, is desirable.
Working Conditions
The position is primarily office-based in Nairobi, with regular visits to active construction sites and healthcare projects. Occasional extended hours and weekend work may be necessary to meet critical installation and commissioning deadlines. Compliance with site safety requirements and the use of personal protective equipment are mandatory.
This role is suited to a proactive Biomedical Engineer with strong technical and project coordination skills who can bridge clinical requirements, engineering design, and construction delivery to support the development of high-quality healthcare infrastructure across Kenya.
